It was 12am… The Last Supper had been eaten, the betrayer (Judas) in place and the disciples still woefully ignorant of what the hours to come would bring. Even so, Jesus leads his disciples to the Garden of Gethsemane… He had prayed in this place many times, but this time something was different. As he recessed deeper into the garden, he took with him Peter, James & John and asked them to “Keep Watch” for he knew that the darkness of the night was nothing compared to the darkness he would soon walk through. And then… Scripture says that, leaving his disciples, he stepped even deeper into the garden, “about a stone’s throw away, knelt down and prayed, ‘Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.’ An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground” (Luke 22:41-44) “About a stone’s through away” Imagine being this close to Jesus and still missing what he was going through… missing what was happening… Just, missing it. Why? Because they were tired… If we aren’t careful, we too can miss the heart of Christ. What it beats for… what it bleeds for. The worries and weights of our world can cause us to sleep through the moments we are to be most watchful… most present. As Good Friday begins, let us take extra care to be present “in spirit & in truth.” To tune our physical self to the spiritual realities of this life and be reminded that “our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Eph 6:12). 👉Pray: Lord, may I not be a stone’s throw away. My spirit is willing, but my flesh is weak. Strengthen me that I might draw near still… to be with you, to know your heart & to follow your will for me, my family and those you have called me to love on your behalf. Amen
